Stir dry ingredients, blend in chilled butter. Pour in vanilla and cream until it all comes together.

Flatten dough to an inch, cut rounds. Bake until toasty golden, about 12–15 minutes.

Toss strawberries with sugar so they’re juicy. Whip cream with a little powdered sugar and vanilla.

Slice shortcakes in half, stack berries and cream in the middle and on top.
