Grate the cooked beets, potatoes, carrots, and hard-boiled eggs.

Chop the onion finely and cut the herring into tiny bits.

Start with grated potatoes on the bottom of a bowl and top them with a layer of mayonnaise. Add layers of herring, onions, more mayo, grated eggs, grated carrots, and finish with beets. Cover everything with another layer of mayonnaise.

You can swap the herring with smoked salmon if that's your preference.

Use a round mold for individual plating or serve it all together in one large bowl.
