Mix the water with the sugar in a small pot. Bring it to a light boil on medium heat, stirring until it’s fully combined. Toss in the lime zest and take the pot off the heat.

Cover the syrup and let it sit for an hour. Strain out the zest using a fine sieve, tossing the zest afterward. (Keep leftover syrup in the fridge and use it within a week.)

In a blender, combine ½ cup of the lime syrup, tart cherry juice, lime juice, ice cubes, and half-and-half (if you're using it).

Blend everything together until the ice turns into a slushy consistency.

Split the icy limeade into four glasses that each hold about 8 ounces, and serve right away.
